MISSING 'GREEN MAN'

For several years now we've had a little plastic green man wearing a red hat and holding a red flag stationed on the side of Turkey Point Road near the Cifala property(1200 block). When you saw him while driving on T.P. Rd., he reminded you to check that your velocity was 25 mph or less. Well, the little green man, even though permanently fastened in place, was removed and is missing. We hope that whoever borrowed the traffic safety device will return it. Please be on the lookout for him. If you learn anything about his whereabouts or about the individual(s) who removed him, please relay the information to a T.P.P.O.A. board member or call Corporal Gary Kazor of the Anne Arundel County Police at 410 222-1961.

A Letter of Thanks
Turkey Point Island has received a note from the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department thanking us for all of the children's gifts donated by Turkey Point Island residents during the Fire House Santa campaign. The gifts were given to needy families throughout Anne Arundel county in time to make their holiday a little brighter. Fire Department volunteer, Paul Mills, of Bay Drive, Turkey Point Island, told the story of a mother who could not hold back the tears when she saw the gifts that her children received. The Fire House Santa program, performed by volunteers of the Woodland Beach Fire Department, has been helping needy Anne Arundel county citizens for approximately twelve years.

ISLAND CLEAN UP
Many thanks to all the ISLANDERS who joined in the ISLAND WIDE CLEAN-UP on April 30, 2011.  In addition to those who strolled the Island with trash bags picking up trash, many projects were also able to be accomplished:

  • new steps were put on the beach end of the pier

  • many boards on the board walk were replaced and a crew walked the length or the Pier and Boardwalk generally inspecting and securing all of the nails and screws

  • the bulkhead at the end of the pier was repaired and re-fortified and new dirt and sod was put in place around the bulkhead to prevent further erosion.

  • the street area leading to the pier was cleaned up with a recently fallen tree being cut back, shrubbery removed and the channel for water run off was redone so as to prevent the runoff from washing away the new sod and dirt at the bulkhead.

  • more gravel was put on the path to the beach at the end of Turkey Point Rd. to allow ease of access to the beach.

  • the Marsh dedication sign was spruced up by planting new vegetation and putting in a timber border

  • the corner of the Marsh at Boyd Dr. was trimmed up and the Marsh at Paca Dr was cleaned up.

  • many loads of debris and Marsh clippings were taken to the county landfill.

As you can imagine many volunteers participated in the activities. The Board and All Islanders thank the many participants who joined in beautifying OUR ISLAND . This participant had a great time working with fellow islanders for a common cause.

Oyster Restoration on Turkey Point Island

TPI resident, Denise HagueThe Chesapeake Bay’s oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is a vital part of the Bay's ecosystem and culture, but the population has been reduced to about 2% of its Colonial-era level. To help reverse this decline, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is committed to in-the-Bay restoration efforts that will bring back the oyster. Turkey Point Island helps with oyster restoration by growing "spat" in cages which hang from the Community's, Vogels' and Hunters' piers. The spat grows from September until June, is harvested by volunteers and returned to CBF for planting on a sanctuary reef in South River. Anyone interested in participating at their own dock can contact CBF. A hearty "Thank You" to Cathy Penn, Denise Hague, Bob Widman and Pat Snapp for their hard work in harvesting the cages!  See more photos.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Turkey Point Island has two AED's available for Islander's in need. One is located at 1169 Turkey Point Rd. This is at the corner of Turkey Point Rd. and Brice Dr. which is the first right on the Island. The second is located at 3704 Ramsey Dr. This is at the corner of Turkey Point Rd. and Ramsey Dr. which is towards the other end of the Island. Many thanks to Bob Widman for his time and talent in the construction of the white box like enclosures in which the AED's are located.

Volunteers
Volunteers are always welcome and greatly appreciated for Turkey point events such as Turkey Point Day, Spring Fling, Halloween, Dumpster Days, and Island maintenance. Any and all are welcome for any amount of time. Please look in THE ISLAND TIMES newsletter for specific needs and times.

Annual Dues and Lot Fees
The annual TPPOA's dues are $50.00 a year. There is also an annual lot fee of $10.00 per lot. The dues and lot fees are for Island maintenance, various expenses incurred during the year and for a nest egg in the event of need.  For information on Island finances or other Island events please feel free to attend any GENERAL MEETING of the TPPOA.

As always, any comments or opinions are appreciated. Feel free to contact Charlie Candon with comments or concerns.

Financial Statements
At each general meeting of the Turkey Point Property Owners Association the current finances of the Association are reviewed and discussed. Any property owner who has questions or concerns regarding the finances should attend the general meetings. As always the Board is interested in input from any islander.

Communicating Via E-Mail
The Board makes Islanders aware of decisions via the newsletter, word of mouth and this website. It is thought that e-mail would also be a valuable avenue to inform more people. For this reason, the Board is asking for all Islanders to let the Board know your e-mail address. Communicating via e-mail can result in speedier information distribution.

TPPOA’s Board Decisions
Decisions are made by the Board which potentially effect each and every household on Turkey Point. These decisions should not be made by a small fraction of Islanders. However, that is what is happening as a result of the limited participation by most Islanders. While the bedlam of mass participation is not desired, more Islanders participating in decisions is desired. Please attend general meetings.
